Event Honors Wisconsin Women for Commitment to Democratic Causes and Social Activism, Pays Tribute to Former First Lady
MADISON – The Democratic Party of Wisconsin announced today that Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano and Planned Parenthood Federation of America President Cecile Richards will keynote the 10th Annual Eleanor Roosevelt Tribute on Wednesday, October 22, 2008 at the Sheraton Madison Hotel.
Governor Napolitano and Cecile Richards and will join Lieutenant Governor Barbara Lawton and other top elected women leaders at the Tribute, which honors women who have demonstrated a strong commitment to Democratic causes.
“We are extremely pleased to have Governor Napolitano and Cecile Richards address our annual Tribute to Eleanor Roosevelt,” said Joe Wineke, Chair of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin. “Both are great women leaders and we are lucky to have such a bright stars come to Madison to discuss the issues that will determine our future.”

Held every year since 1999, the Eleanor Roosevelt Tribute honors women in Wisconsin who have displayed commitment to Democratic causes and engagement in social activism. The event also pays tribute to the legacy of former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, who dedicated herself to enhancing the role of women in politics and government and improving the lot of the underprivileged.
Chosen by Time Magazine as one of America’s Top Five Governors, Janet Napolitano is a proven leader who has focused on the issues that matter most, such as education and children, economic development and public safety. As Arizona’s first woman Attorney General, America's first woman to succeed a woman as Governor, and the first woman elected as Chair of the National Governors Association, Governor Napolitano has broken down barriers for women across the United States.
Cecile Richards is President of Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) and the Planned Parenthood Action Fund. Richards has led the organization to many significant achievements, including its success in ensuring FDA approval of over-the-counter status for emergency contraception, and the launch of a nationwide campaign to provide comprehensive, medically accurate sex education for all young Americans. Before joining Planned Parenthood, she served as deputy chief of staff for Rep. Nancy Pelosi and played a key role in her election as the Democratic Speaker of the House of Representatives.
