ICYMI: A Historic Week for President Biden
Health care, postal reform, and a new Supreme Court justice – oh my!
MADISON, Wis. – Over the past week, President Biden and Democrats have delivered an executive action that will expand health care coverage and lower costs for families across our country, signed legislation improving services at the U.S. Postal Service, and confirmed Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson as the first Black woman to sit on the highest court in our country.
Across the state, Wisconsinites are hearing about President Biden’s historic week:
Wisconsin Public Radio: Postal workers hope new law will ‘stop the bleeding’ at U.S. Postal Service
“Postal workers in Wisconsin are optimistic that a new law overhauling the U.S. Postal Service and injecting more than $100 billion into the service will help put an end to years of instability in the service.
“A bipartisan bill to address the financially strapped service will save money by reducing USPS’s health care costs and eliminating a burdensome federal requirement that the service pre-fund retirees’ expenses. The bill also makes six-day delivery a matter of law, after some cost-cutting plans could have ended Saturday service, a plan that was announced and then rejected in 2013.
Among the Wisconsin delegation, only GOP Sen. Ron Johnson and GOP Rep. Bryan Steil voted against it. Johnson in particular had defended DeJoy’s 2020 plan to slow down mail service as a cost-cutting measure, calling concerns about effects on the election a “conspiracy theory.”
CBS 58: Ketanji Brown Jackson’s Supreme Court confirmation highlights the importance of diversity among judges
“Wisconsin’s Democratic Party says the historic confirmation means positive change for the country. ‘It means that the U.S. Supreme Court is less likely to make some of the historic errors like it made in times previous when the court was entirely composed of white men. This is critical for the pursuit of justice,’ said Ben Wikler, Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair.”
