In recognition of Older Americans Month, which encompasses the month of May, Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair, Martha Laning, released the following statement:
“Democrats have been champions for older Americans throughout history. It was the Democrat, Franklin Roosevelt, who brought us Social Security. It was the Democrat, Lyndon Johnson, who brought us Medicare, Medicaid, and the Older Americans Act. Most recently, it was the Democrats, President Barack Obama, and the Congressional Democrats, who passed the Affordable Care Act.
“Despite the great success we have seen from these programs, Republicans in Wisconsin, and across the country, are trying to strip older Americans of the retirement and healthcare security they have paid into for decades. People who work hard and pay into Social Security and Medicare should have the peace of mind to know those investments will be there for them when they need them most. It’s the right thing to do, and Democrats will always stand up for the sacred promise we’ve made to older Americans by protecting and strengthening the programs that ensure they retire with dignity and respect.”
