In light of testimony given yesterday in the federal court hearing challenging Wisconsin’s restrictive voter photo ID law, where a former GOP staffer testified that several Republican legislators were “giddy” at the prospect of making it harder to vote, Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Martha Laning released the following statement:
“I am appalled that Republican leaders would celebrate restricting voters access to the polls and purposefully erect barriers to the ballot box for their own political gain. It is shameful that Republicans are going as far as to rig elections in their favor by attacking the sacred voting rights of all Wisconsinites.
“Today’s testimony proves that Republican’s voter photo ID law is wholly undemocratic and disparages a value shared by all of us in the Badger State: that everyone, regardless of zip code, gender, or race has the right to have their voice heard through the power of their ballot.
“Democrats in Wisconsin believe that everyone who is eligible to vote, and wants to cast a vote, should be able to do so. Our state’s leaders should be tearing down the barriers that make casting a ballot difficult, not creating more obstacles to prevent students, seniors, and the poor from having equal access.”
