Brett Davis Voted Against Health Care for Children with Autism

MADISON – State Rep. Brett Davis voted against Legislation to require insurance companies to cover the costs of this Autism Spectrum Disorder therapy. The important Legislation passed the State Senate overwhelmingly but fell three Republican votes short of passing the Assembly, thanks in part to Brett Davis.

Today, Jim Smith, Executive Director of the Assembly Democratic Campaign Committee, pointed out that Brett Davis refused to help these children and instead got in line behind his party bosses and insurance company contributors.

“Brett Davis turned his back on children with Autism when they needed him most,” said Smith. “Brett Davis had the chance to do the right thing for thousands of families in Wisconsin struggling to afford the cost of keeping their kids healthy but he chose to stand with the insurance companies instead.”  

In Wisconsin one out of every 150 children are being diagnosed with some form of Autism Spectrum Disorder. For many of these children the news is not all bad. Through intensive therapy they can live normal and productive lives.

Unfortunately this therapy is not covered by insurance companies and costs their families thousands of dollars each year. Legislation to require insurance companies to cover the costs of this therapy passed the State Senate overwhelmingly but fell three Republican votes short of passing the Assembly.

“John Waelti understands that middle class families already pay too much for their health insurance and it should be there for them when they need it most,” said Smith. “John Waelti will never put insurance companies before families or sick children.”
