Democratic Party Leader Statement on Passing of Revered Conservationist Martin Hanson

MADISON – Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Joe Wineke today issued the following statement on the passing of conservationist Martin Hanson:

“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Martin Hanson.  Martin was a pioneer of the conservation movement in Wisconsin. He worked closely with Senator Gaylord Nelson to establish, protect, and preserve the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, rightfully called the jewels of Lake Superior.

“Martin was a Northwood’s Democrat and one of the founders of the modern Democratic Party of Wisconsin. His brother, Louis, served as chair of the Wisconsin Democratic Party. Martin was also a great friend of the university and a lifelong conservationist.

“Most of all, Martin was fun to be around, a guy with a great personality. That’s probably the reason Gaylord Nelson chose him to act as guide when President Kennedy visited the ApostleIslands.

“We have lost a great conservationist, good friend and staunch progressive Democrat in Martin Hanson.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.  He will be deeply missed, but his contributions to our state will have a lasting impact.”
