DPW Chair Wineke Statement on GOP Endorsement of Workplace Discrimination

Apr 27, 2009

MADISON – Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Joe Wineke today released the following statement on Assembly Republicans’ shameful stall tactics on meaningful equal pay legislation for Wisconsin workers. The delay came, ironically, on National Equal Pay Day.

“Using obscure procedural tactics, Assembly Republicans today blocked passage of legislation that would provide new protections for workers against workplace discrimination. Thankfully, the Assembly Democratic leadership has moved quickly to ensure this legislation is passed as soon as tomorrow morning.

“Research shows that women make only $0.78 for every $1.00 men make, nationally. Here in Wisconsin, women’s salaries average 25% less than men in comparable positions. These statistics are appalling, and the GOP’s endorsement of such blatant workplace discrimination is even worse.

“Apparently, workplace discrimination is ‘A-Okay’ with the GOP.”
