MADISON – Democratic Party of Wisconsin (DPW) Chair Joe Wineke today issued the following statement on President Obama’s selection of Sonia Sotomayor as his nominee to the United States Supreme Court. When confirmed, Sotomayor will be the third woman to serve on the Court and the Court’s first Hispanic justice.
“Today, President Barack Obama followed through on his promise to nominate a person of rigorous intellect and a mastery of the law to the Supreme Court. Judge Sonia Sotomayor embodies those qualities as someone who brings not only brilliance in the law, but also a common sense understanding of how the law practically works.
“Judge Sotomayor has been hailed as a role model for her ascent to the federal bench from an upbringing in a South Bronx housing project, and is also known as one of the most able federal judges currently sitting on the bench.
“Throughout her three decade career, Sonia Sotomayor has been lauded as a fearless jurist with a sharp, independent mind and a deep commitment to the rule of law and our constitutional traditions. I commend President Obama on his outstanding choice and congratulate Judge Sotomayor on her nomination.”
