MADISON – Democratic Party of Wisconsin (DPW) Chair Joe Wineke today released the following statement on the passing of Rev. Robert Cornell, who formerly served as a Democratic member of Congress representing Northeast Wisconsin.
“Rev. Robert Cornell was a great leader, representative, and mentor to his constituents in Northeast Wisconsin. As a Congressman, Rev. Cornell was a tireless advocate for civil rights and peace, and he spent his career fighting against poverty and discrimination.
“Rev. Cornell was the first Democrat in a generation elected to Congress in Northeast Wisconsin, and he served with honor and dignity, paving the way for future leaders. As a fierce advocate against the war in Vietnam, Rev. Cornell was an important voice in the peace movement in Wisconsin and across the nation. His message transcended politics and religion, and he will be deeply missed.”
