One Year Ago
MADISON-Following is the statement of Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Mike Tate on the one-year anniversary of the inauguration of President Barack Obama:
“A year ago today, as the cannonade rang around the National Mall, Americans watched as Barack Obama was sworn in as the 44th President of the United States.
“From that icy perch before the Capitol, the president assessed the ‘gathering clouds and raging storms’ confronting the nation. Facing a financial system on the brink of collapse, difficult wars being prosecuted overseas and an economy failing to produce real and sustainable jobs, he promised a new type of leadership and a new era of change.
“Only a year after that historic day, we in Wisconsin know that President Obama is delivering on his promises as we recognize the great distances we have come with an eye on the great deal of work there is left to do.
“The financial system is once again on solid footing. Millions of jobs have been created or preserved. A national security policy based on strategy and cooperation, not fear and intemperance, is in place. Science and the law, and not ideology, is once again guiding the hand of decision-makers. New frameworks are being constructed to protect average Americans against the folly of unchecked greed. And everywhere, including right here in Wisconsin, the shoots are showing of new jobs and a better economy.
“It is worth recalling today the words of his Inaugural Address, when,President Obama called on Americans to answer history’s challenges: ‘With hope and virtue, let us brave once more the icy currents, and endure what storms may come. Let it be said by our children’s children that when we were tested we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn back nor did we falter…’”
