Statement of DPW Chair Mike Tate in

Observance of the MLK Jr. Holiday

MADISON – Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Mike Tate released the following statement today in observance of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

“As Americans today honor the contributions of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., it is worth recalling in these difficult economic times that his life bore witness not merely for civil rights and nonviolence, but for economic and educational fairness.

“In his imagined letter of the Apostle Paul in 1956, he wrote that, ‘God intends for all of his children to have the basic necessities of life, and he has left in this universe enough and to spare for that purpose. So I call upon you to bridge the gulf between abject poverty and superfluous wealth.’

“It is with great humility that we reflect on these sentiments today.”
