Thompson Supports Heath Insurance “Mandate”
MADISON – As was reported by the media yesterday, former Bush Administration Secretary Tommy Thompson has supported the individual mandate that Wisconsin Republicans are now targeting in an attempt to repeal historic health insurance reform for Wisconsin. The Miami Herald reported yesterday that the “The truth is this is a Republican idea,” and that Thompson and George Bush embraced the individual mandate:”
“Seeking to deradicalize the idea during a symposium in Orlando in September 2008, Thompson said, "Just like people are required to have car insurance, they could be required to have health insurance”
“We look forward to Secretary Thompson letting the people of Wisconsin know about his disagreement with Wisconsin Republicans who are politicizing this issue with calls for a frivolous lawsuit that is nothing more than an effort to repeal health insurance reform and put insurance companies back in control of our health care,” said Mike Tate, Chair of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin.
