How Is Sean Duffy Celebrating Medicare's 45th Birthday? (7/29/10)

Jul 28, 2010

MADISON – Sean Duffy has expressed support for the Republican plan to end Medicare as we know it, so we wondered how he was celebrating its 45th birthday today.

-Since Sean Duffy favors rationing medical care for seniors, maybe he will ration birthday candles for a cake to celebrate the program signed into being on July 30, 1965, by President Lyndon Johnson.

-Will Sean Duffy solicit party favors from the Wall Street and corporate special interests, who would love nothing more than to see Medicare pared or ended altogether?

-Perhaps Sean Duffy, whose family has received more than $100,000 in taxpayer-funded healthcare as a state employee, will reminisce and raise toasts to the 45 years that his fellow Republicans have tried to weaken or outright end Medicare altogether.

-Maybe Sean Duffy will go to the homes of the thousands of north woods seniors that will be receiving $250 checks to close the Medicare prescription “donut hole” and ask them to close their eyes, make a wish and sign over their checks to his campaign so he can end THAT benefit, too.

-Or maybe Sean Duffy will play “Pin the Tail On the Donkey,” with his fast friend Newt Gingrich, who wants to let Medicare, “Whither on the vine.”

“Forty-five years ago, Republicans were on the wrong side of history when they opposed the creation of Medicare. Republicans like Sean Duffy are on the wrong side of history today, when they propose rationing medical care for seniors and ending the benefit that helps seniors pay for prescription drugs,” Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Mike Tate said Thursday. “As we celebrate Medicare’s creation today, we must be ever-vigilant against people like Sean Duffy who would see this birthday of Medicare be its last.”
