Washington-Based Group May Have Violated Law With Poll (7/23/10)

Jul 22, 2010

MADISON – A Washington-based and corporate-funded special interest group was trying to promote a “poll” in Wisconsin’s 3rd Congressional District that may have been conducted in violation of state law.

The Democratic Party of Wisconsin was investigating the poll, apparently conducted by the Washington-based, “Americans For Prosperity.”

Wisconsin law requires pollsters to identify the organization or funding source for the poll when asked. This law was passed to promote transparency and public accountability. It appears AFP’s pollsters did not divulge the backing of this poll when asked by Wisconsin citizens. This is a direct violation of Wisconsin law.

“If it is proven that the group who conducted this poll did not identify themselves, then this not merely violates our sense of decency in Wisconsin, it also violate our laws,” Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Mike Tate said Friday.
