Request Audit and Criminal Investigation by the Internal Revenue Service

MADISON – The Democratic Party of Wisconsin today asked the Internal Revenue Service for a full audit and criminal investigation into state senator and Republican candidate for the Third Congressional District Dan Kapanke’s admitted abuse of charitable contributions to pay down his personal debts. /Uploads/PDFs/sen._kapanke_complaint_-_9.27.10.pdf

Kapanke, whose resignation the DPW seeks, acknowledged the illegal scheme only after the party on August 25th filed a complaint with the Government Accountability Board after tax records for the foundation revealed the scheme.

“State Senator Dan Kapanke’s use of tax-exempt money for prohibited purposes violates not only state ethics laws and the Internal Revenue Code; it violates the public trust as well,” Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Mike Tate said Monday. “He has already admitted to violating Wisconsin ethics law, it appears that he has also violated federal tax law. For the good of the people of Wisconsin, It is time for Dan Kapanke to resign.”
