MADISON– In a pointed letter published today to mark Mental Health Awareness Month, a 25-year veteran of Milwaukee County’s mental health hospital decried Scott Walker’s “failure of leadership, understanding and basic decency” that has led to multiple tragedies at the facility.
Sandy Jacobs, an occupational therapist, noted the steep cuts and dangerous policies Walker has adopted at the facility, where multiple probes are underway following starvation deaths, preventible drug overdoses and the sexual assault of female patients.
Jacobs concluded that, “The goal of raising Mental Health Awareness this month is creating successful outcomes for a very vulnerable, and sometimes very needy population. That success requires leadership. It pains me to say that, other than those rare moments when his political health required it, Walker has shown none.”
