Potential Cuts Include Refusal of $34 Million in Title 1 Funds For Low Income Students
MADISON – Having marched in lockstep with previous Republican efforts to slash funding to Milwaukee Public Schools, Jeff Stone now stands poised to support the most devastating cuts in the system’s history.
Read about the lunatic cuts proposed by Stone’s political patron Scott Walker here.
The cuts of $200 million would mean mass layoffs and closings of schools.
“Republican insider Jeff Stone has consistently voted to fund tax cuts for the rich by cutting investments in education and it looks like he now will put his backing behind what would amount to the most devastating cuts in the history of the Milwaukee Public Schools,” said Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Mike Tate. “It is becoming clear that Jeff Stone is seeking to curry favor with his Republican bosses instead of standing up for the working families of Milwaukee County, who used to rely on public education as a way to advance in our economy.”
Media reports have indicated that potential cuts also include the refusal of $33.5 million in federal Title 1 funds that is dedicated to help low-achieving students in districts with high levels of poverty. Does Jeff Stone agree with Walker’s proposal to gut education aid for low-income students?
According to Third Coast Digest:
Title 1 funds are allocated to more than 50,000 public schools across the country to provide additional academic support and learning opportunities to help low-achieving children master challenging curricula and meet state standards in core academic subjects. For example, Title 1 dollars can be used for extra instruction in reading and mathematics, as well as special preschool, after-school and summer programs to extend and reinforce the regular school curriculum. Bonds did not cite Walker’s reasons for proposing an end to the funding.
