D.C. Lobbyist Tommy Thompson Again Denounces Health Care Legislation He Previously Supported

May 25, 2011

MADISON – In an unscripted and unplanned conversation with right-wing radio host Charlie Sykes yesterday, health insurance lobbyist Tommy Thompson once again denounced his support for the health care law he previously championed.

Listen to the appearance here.

Thompson, who has made millions of dollars working on behalf of wealthy special interests like the health insurance and pharmaceutical companies that would stand to benefit from a rollback of the requirements of the Affordable Care Act, was initially a supporter of the bipartisan health care legislation, including its individual mandate provision.

Now, to garner the support of Scott Walker Republicans who have abandoned Thompson’s own institutions in their radical shift to the far right, Thompson finds himself having to disavow the legislation he once hailed as a, milestone in achieving meaningful health-care reform for millions of Americans.”

“Tommy Thompson continues to run away from his past support for the Affordable Care Act in a blatant attempt to curry favor with Tea Party extremists and Scott Walker Republicans who are out of touch with the needs of Wisconsinites,” Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Mike Tate said Thursday. “The people of Wisconsin deserve better than a flip-flopper who is willing to sell out his own beliefs, and put insurance companies back in control of our health care, all to advance his political career.”
