While Jim Holperin Stands Up for the Northwoods, Kim Simac Fails to Show Up

Aug 14, 2011

MADISON – A new web ad recently released by the Holperin for Senate campaign features Jim Holperin discussing how time and time again Kim Simac has simply refused to face the voters and discuss key issues facing our state.

“Kim Simac’s decision to hide from voters behind an avalanche of negative conservative attack ads is disgraceful,” said DPW Chair Mike Tate.  “Maybe she’s afraid of her extreme views being further exposed to the voters, or maybe she knows her total unfamiliarity with state issues is a turn off for voters.  Either way, her refusal is an enormous disservice to voters in the Northwoods, and proves yet again Kim Simac isn’t ready for legislative service.”

Kim Simac’s failure to show up was one factor in the Wausau Daily Herald’s endorsement of Holperin, which wrote, “In this recall campaign, Holperin made public appearances across the district. He said yes to every proposed forum or debate that would have brought the candidates together. By contrast, Simac declined all except a single radio-broadcast debate, pleading scheduling conflicts.” (http://www.wausaudailyherald.com/article/20110811/WDH06/108110421/Our-view-Holperin-best-choice-recall-contest).

Simac’s radical views – from believing we need to “wean” people off of successful programs like Medicare, to letting the Tea Party write school curriculum for our children, to her obsession with comparing everything to Nazism – is well documented. But it’s her breathtaking ignorance of basic state policy issues that raised serious concerns recently.

In the one forum she did choose to attend, WRJO-FM in Eagle River, Simac was baffled by the pretty basic question, “what specific legislation is moving through the Capitol right now that you look forward to – if elected – supporting or challenging?”
Simac’s word-for-word response?

“Hmm, well, I think that . . . I guess I would have to say that with all of the things that I’ve been looking at, I think you just stumped me. All the things I’ve been looking at for all the last couple months here trying to get up on board as a new candidate, I’ve been trying to stay up with the issues, but I would have to say that I can’t name you a single one right now.” (http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/news/127543543.html)

“Kim Simac can’t name one single issue?  With a stunning response like this, it’s no wonder she is failing to show up and face the voters directly,” said Tate.

“I’m Jim Holperin.  Campaigns are supposed to be about candidates facing voters to say what they’ll do if elected.  Not this one.  My opponent has refused time after time to face the media, senior citizens, educators and others.  Instead, she’s letting big corporations use attack ads on her behalf.  You know me and my record of service to the North.  But no one knows where Kim Simac stands because she won’t show up.  I’m Jim Holperin and I’d appreciate your vote on August 16th.”
