As Troubled Wisconsin Homeowners Suffer, Scott Walker Raids Foreclosure Settlement

Feb 09, 2012

Scott Walker yesterday announced that he would use more than $25 million in settlement funds intended to assist Wisconsin homeowners affected by the foreclosure crisis to offset the $143 million budget deficit created by his Republican Party’s multi-billion dollar tax giveaway.

Walker, who has been an outspoken critic of past administrations using one-time settlement funds to balance budgets, made the decision to raid the settlement in consultation with Tea Party Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen, who stated that his office has legal authority over the funds.

“Working families all over Wisconsin are suffering from the effects of Scott Walker’s failed economic policies that have Wisconsin leading the nation in job loss and cuts to education,” Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Mike Tate said Friday. “Now that they are finally getting some relief from the federal government, Scott Walker is snatching that money to finance his $2.3 billion tax giveaway to millionaires and billionaires. Walker has previously criticized such raids, characterizing them as “robbing Peter to pay Paul.” In this case, Scott Walker is robbing Peter and Paul to pay for his own radical agenda.”
