Republican Redistricting Violates Voting Rights Act

Mar 21, 2012

Following is a statement from Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Mike Tate on this morning’s court ruling that the Republican redistricting maps drawn last summer violate the Voting Rights Act and must be redrawn.

“Given the clandestine culture that included withholding information from the public and secrecy pledges signed by Republican legislators, this morning’s court ruling that the Republican redistricting map violates the Voting Rights Act comes as no surprise. As news about how these maps were created in backroom meetings hidden from the public rolled out, it was clear that these maps were not drawn in good faith and instead aimed to suppress the votes of Latinos by splitting them into two districts, therefore weakening their voice. Once again, it’s been proven that Scott Walker’s Republican Party acts only in its own interest, not for the common good, and attempts to hold power back from those who might disagree with them.”
