ICYMI: Paul Ryan Tax Plan Would Raise Taxes on Middle Class; Ryan Sought Stimulus Funds While Decrying Program

Aug 13, 2012

Two new media reports show Paul Ryan talking out of both sides of his mouth by bashing stimulus funds while simultaneously seeking these funds for pet projects, and also claiming his budget plan would help middle class Americans even after a bipartisan group of legislators found it would raise their taxes by thousands of dollars.

The first report, by the Boston Globe, found that, “As Representative Paul Ryan was railing against President Obama’s $787 billion stimulus package as a “wasteful spending spree,” he wrote at least four letters to Obama’s secretary of energy asking that millions of dollars from the program be granted to a pair of Wisconsin conservation groups … The advocacy appeared to pay off; both groups were awarded the economic recovery funds — one receiving a $20 million grant to help thousands of local businesses and homes improve their energy efficiency, agency documents show.” [1]

The second report, by ABC News, showed how a report by the Joint Economic Committee, which is made up of 10 Democratic and 10 Republican legislators, proved the Ryan budget “would raise taxes by $1,358 for jointly-filing households earning between $50,000 and $100,000” and that “Households with incomes between $100,000 and $200,000 would see their taxes increase by $2,681.” [2]

“These new reports show what Wisconsinsites have known for a long time: Paul Ryan wants to play by his own rules and reap the benefits of programs himself while denying them to others. We also know here that Ryan refuses to see the reality that his tax plan would force hardships on America’s backbone — working, middle class families,” Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Mike Tate said. “As the campaign continues, the rest of America will learn more and more about the bad priorities of Paul Ryan, making their decision to re-elect President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden all the more clear.”
