Following is the statement of Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Mike Tate on Scott Walker advocating the elimination of Wisconsin’s same-day voter registration laws.
“Campaigning at the Ronald Reagan Foundation in California instead of communicating with Wisconsinites, Scott Walker rolled out the next phase of his dangerous legislative agenda, advocating the elimination of Wisconsin’s same-day voter registration laws.
“As evidenced by robust levels of voter turnout and participation, Wisconsinites take our civic duty seriously, and same-day voter registration has played a part in ensuring that every eligible elector is able to cast their ballot.
“Yet despite our state’s history of expanding voting rights and running clean and open elections, Scott Walker and his Republican Party have attempted to erect unnecessary road blocks that impede voter access – especially for students, seniors and minorities – at every turn.
“That’s because Republicans learned a long time ago that when more people vote, Democrats win. They’ve erected barrier after barrier to keep people from participating, and this is just the next step in the process.
“Whether it’s seeking to require photo identification, reducing the early-vote period or now advocating the elimination of same-day voter registration, Scott Walker blatantly seeks to roll back decades worth of hard-fought freedoms in order to shore up his reputation as a national hero to the Tea Party and to preserve his own political power.
“But the courts have already spoken against Scott Walker’s unconstitutional voter suppression law and the people have now spoken against his Republican Party’s dishonest and divisive agenda. This party is in serious trouble when the only way they can win is to keep people from voting. Scott Walker proceeds at his own peril.”
