MADISON – As Scott Walker takes some of his harshest “friendly fire’ yet from Wisconsin Republicans in the national news the Governor continues his summer of presidential campaigning with a stop in Colorado today.
“Traveling Man: Wisconsin’s Scott Walker shuttles to Iowa and other battleground states to ignite bid for the presidency,” by Washington Examiner reporter Steve Contoro exposes cracks within the Republican machine when it comes to the Governor’s national ambitions – the following excerpts tell the tale:
“At home, however, Republicans are less enthusiastic about Walker’s national ambitions, wishing he’d focus more on his 2014 re-election campaign, which is far from a slam dunk. Walker’s approval rating stood at 48 percent in a recent Marquette Law School poll, and his disapproval numbers hit 46 percent, a testament to just how polarizing Walker remains.”
“Walker would have to explain to a national audience why he failed to create the 250,000 new jobs he promised in his gubernatorial campaign, a goal now virtually impossible to reach by Election Day…. Sykes said a candidate like Texas Gov. Rick Perry could trump Walker on economic growth. “Let’s face it: [Running for president] would be a huge leap for Gov. Walker,” he said.”
“When even Walker cheerleader-in-chief Charlie Sykes poo-poohing the notion of a Presidential campaign by Scott Walker doesn’t put a dent in Walker’s fixation on the Presidency you know there’s only one thing Scott Walker is “focused like a laser” on, and it ain’t job creation here in Wisconsin,” Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Mike Tate said today. “It’s certainly unusual for Charlie and I to agree on anything. But it’s even more unusual for Scott Walker to disagree with Charlie, ignore his advice, and fire up the plane for another out of state presidential campaign swing anyway.
