Tens of thousands of Wisconsinites stand to lose their health coverage through BadgerCare next month thanks to Gov. Walker putting partisan politics over his neediest constituents.
Scott Walker rejected millions in federal Medicaid funding to expand eligibility for the program up to 138% of the federal poverty level. After squandering a chance to insure more Wisconsinites at a lower cost to the state, Gov. Walker’s political grandstanding will mean 77,470 people currently enrolled in BadgerCare will lose their health insurance next year.
Gannett Media reports that the state is mailing paper applications for health insurance coverage through the federal insurance exchange to the more 77,000 people who will lose coverage, a move that is too little and too late for hard-working Wisconsin families.
“Even as the evidence piles up against his decision, Gov. Walker still chooses to leave almost 80,000 Wisconsinites out in the cold without health insurance,” Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Mike Tate said on Tuesday. “No matter how the administration tries to spin the facts, it is clear that rejecting the federal dollars meant to expand BadgerCare was not in the interest of Wisconsin, but in the governor’s own political interest.”
