Following is the statement of Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Mike Tate on the Republican voter suppression legislation passed in the middle of the night.
“Despite the news earlier this week that Wisconsin had again fallen in the job creation rankings, Republicans in the legislature again ignored jobs and the economy, instead using the final hours of the legislative session to pass a voter suppression bill designed to make it harder for seniors, students, veterans, and minorities to exercise their rights at the ballot box.
“The Republican attack on voting rights has nearly universal opposition from editorial boards across the state and with good reason: this legislation is a thinly-veiled attempt to change the rules in the middle of the game because Republicans know they can’t win based on the strength of their ideas or their record.
“Despite the Republicans’ best efforts to rig the next election to overcome the lack of enthusiasm for their failed agenda, Wisconsinites will reject Republicans up and down the ticket this November because they know that Walker and his Republican Party didn’t fix the economic mess they created.
“Even still, Scott Walker can show he’s serious about focusing on the needs of middle-class families, and about protecting our democracy, by vetoing this shameful attack on voting rights.”
