For the second day in a row, the state’s largest newspaper is taking Scott Walker to task for his completely false and misleading claim that 17,000 new ready-to-hire businesses have been created during his first term.
Following yesterday’s analysis from Politifact that said Walker’s claim “fails” and “crumbles upon examination,” the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel editorial board today stated that Walker’s claim “doesn’t hold up to scrutiny,” noting that “Walker’s goal, of course, is to deflect attention from his most high-profile campaign promise: The governor promised that Wisconsin companies would create 250,000 net new jobs during his first term. The latest scorecard shows 105,800 jobs have been created, and even the governor’s most ardent supporters realize that he won’t be able to fulfill his promise by the end of his term in January.”
Under Scott Walker, Wisconsin ranks 9th out of 10 Midwest states on job growth and just 35th in the nation in overall job creation, down from 11th the day Walker took office.
So the Journal Sentinel editorial board hit the nail on its head with their conclusion on Walker’s false and cynical claim: “The state needs to do whatever it can to reasonably and responsibly promote business creation. That serves the interests of the state and its citizens. Stretching the truth, as the governor is doing in this case, serves no one but himself.”
