#TBT To Glenn Grothman’s Push to Criminalize Single Parenthood

Sep 17, 2014

Poverty is rising among single mothers in Wisconsin, according to the latest U.S. Census Bureau data released earlier this week, so how would Glenn Grothman help combat this crisis? By criminalizing single parenthood, of course.
In March 2012, Grothman garnered national attention yet again for an offensive legislative proposal, this time a bill he authored that would have officially labeled single parenthood as “a contributing factor to child abuse and neglect.”

Single parents make up 31 percent of all parents in Wisconsin.

In an exchange on the Alan Colmes show, Grothman said that women particularly were encouraged by society to become single parents noting that many women are “trained to lie” about unintended pregnancies by social service professions. Grothman also stated that women need “to be educated, because right now the culture encourages a single motherhood lifestyle” and “a lot of women are adopting the single motherhood lifestyle because the government creates a situation in which it is almost preferred.”

“With Wisconsin facing a projected budget deficit of at least $3 billion and working families facing stagnant wages and higher healthcare costs due to Glenn Grothman’s fiscally irresponsible choices, trying to make it on one income is especially hard these days,” Democratic Party of Wisconsin Communications Director Melissa Baldauff said Thursday. “So it is beyond offensive that Glenn Grothman would seek to criminalize single parenthood, period, but especially when he has at every turn fought policies that actually help children live a better life. Grothman has gutted the state Earned Income Tax Credit, made the biggest cut to education in Wisconsin history, and opposed a modest increase in the minimum wage. I sound like a broken record by now, but shame on Glenn Grothman.”
