WisDems Statement on Roe v. Wade Anniversary

Jan 21, 2015

Following is the statement of Democratic Party of Wisconsin Communications Director Melissa Baldauff on the 42nd anniversary of Roe v. Wade.

“The issue of a woman’s right to make her own healthcare decisions was resolved by the Supreme Court 42 years ago today, yet Republicans like Scott Walker continue to attack women’s access to comprehensive reproductive healthcare by any means possible.

“With families in Wisconsin and across the nation calling for politicians to focus first on economic policies that invest in what works to grow our middle class, Republicans in Congress are instead prioritizing draconian legislation that actually puts women’s health at risk by radically restricting safe and legal abortions.

“You don’t need to ban safe and legal abortion to make it inaccessible. If it weren’t for two federal judges, Scott Walker’s legislation would prevent the majority of Wisconsin women from accessing a safe and legal abortion — even in cases of rape, incest, or if their health was at risk.

“Women don’t need politicians like Scott Walker or Glenn Grothman passing laws that put our health and safety at risk, and we certainly don’t need them to make our personal, private medical decisions for us. It’s a shame that 42 years after the fact Republicans still want to roll back the clock on women and our rights, but thankfully Democrats will continue fighting to protect reproductive freedom.”
