Ron Johnson’s Beltway Blunder: The “Nuclear Codes” Edition

Aug 19, 2016

The “Ronald and Donald” show took a dangerous turn this week, when Senator Johnson said he “certainly” trusted the former host of “The Apprentice” with the nuclear codes. In an interview with WAOW, Sen. Johnson was asked about Trump’s temperament. When asked if he trusted Trump with the nuclear codes, Johnson responded, “certainly.” You would hope that Sen. Johnson had a good reason to trust Trump as commander-in-chief. So what was Johnson’s rationale? Trump’s extreme picks for the Supreme Court and the fact that he has a nice family. For Sen. Johnson, that’s what it takes to command our nation’s nuclear arsenal.

Sadly the comments were not a surprise. After all, Sen. Johnson has said for months that on the big issues he’s in “total agreement” with Trump. Johnson has continued to embrace Trump despite his racist, sexist and hateful attacks. At this point it doesn’t look like Trump could say or do anything that would cross the line for Sen. Johnson.

“The fact that Sen. Johnson truly believes that Trump is qualified to handle the nuclear codes would be funny if it weren’t so scary. Instead it’s just a sad reminder that Sen. Johnson will say anything in his desperate attempt to stay in Washington,” said Harry Hartfield, spokesman for the Democratic Party of Wisconsin.
