SHOT/CHASER: Rep. Sean Duffy Gets His Answer

Jun 15, 2017

Last night’s revelation that the Special Counsel, Robert Mueller, is investigating Trump for obstructing justice marked a major turning point in the Russia investigation. It also likely marks a significant turning point for Rep. Sean Duffy, who earlier this week asked Fox News’ Martha MacCallum “what the hell are we investigating?”

SHOT:  ICYMI: Rep. Sean Duffy Actually Said These Words Out Loud

“During an interview with Fox News, Rep. Sean Duffy told host Martha MacCallum ‘And my concern, Martha, is what the hell are we investigating?’ In the same interview, Duffy also asked, ‘Why are we going through this charade of an investigation when there’s no evidence that Donald Trump had anything to do with the Russians?’

“Contrary to Duffy’s parroting of Republican talking points many questions still remain regarding the relationship of Donald Trump, his known associates, and the Russians.

“Here’s a refresher for the Congressman:

  • After firing James Comey, Trump told Russian Foreign Minister and Ambassador that firing Comey eased the pressure of Russia investigation; Sec. of State Tillerson informs them that U.S. will no longer demand concession for returning properties seized by U.S. as part of 2016 election sanctions.
  • Trump also admitted to Lester Holt that he was thinking of the “Russia thing” when he decided to fire Comey
  • In James Comey’s June 8th testimony to the Senate Intelligence Committee, the former FBI Director confirmed under oath that Trump told at least four lies, often multiple times, to Americans about his interactions with Comey.”

CHASER: WaPo: Special counsel is investigating Trump for possible obstruction of justice, officials say

“The special counsel overseeing the investigation into Russia’s role in the 2016 election is interviewing senior intelligence officials as part of a widening probe that now includes an examination of whether President Trump attempted to obstruct justice, officials said.

“The move by special counsel Robert S. Mueller III to investigate Trump’s conduct marks a major turning point in the nearly year-old FBI investigation, which until recently focused on Russian meddling during the presidential campaign and on whether there was any coordination between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin. Investigators have also been looking for any evidence of possible financial crimes among Trump associates, officials said.”

“After being too scared to challenge Senator Tammy Baldwin, Rep. Sean Duffy has nothing better to do than issue embarrassing, over-the-top, and unfiltered defenses of President Trump,” said Democratic Party of Wisconsin spokesman Brandon Weathersby. “Instead of wishing away the investigation, Duffy should join Democrats call for an independent 9/11-style commission to give the American people the answers they deserve.”
