Statement of Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Martha Laning on Falling State Revenues
The following is the statement of Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Martha Laning in response to new reports from the nonpartisan legislative budget office showing budget numbers will fall nearly $100 million short of projections:
“Today’s news is incredibly disappointing and shows that Gov. Scott Walker and legislative Republicans continue to tell us fairytales about the state of Wisconsin’s economy.
“Under our President’s leadership, states are recovering from the Great Recession, but in Wisconsin we seem to keep falling behind. Our neighbors in Minnesota enjoy a $1.9 billion surplus they plan to invest in progressive ideas like early childhood education, fully funded public schools, and tax cuts for the middle class.
“On Tuesday night, after the Gov. Walker’s State of the State speech, Democrats implored him to reach across the aisle to make sure Wisconsin families have an opportunity to get ahead.
“After the worst year for mass layoffs and plant closings in the state since Republicans took control in 2010, it’s time for the party in power to admit their experiments have failed and take a new approach. Our economy should work for everyone not just the millionaires and special interests.”
