Sen. Johnson’s own super PAC has him behind.
Pro Johnson super PAC Let America Work released a truly bonkers poll today in a desperate attempt to shore up Senator Johnson’s floundering fundraising and attract more billionaire donors. It’s just another reminder that Senator Johnson has outsourced his campaign to dark money groups that have bankrolled him. After all, Let America Work itself is the brainchild of Johnson’s former chief strategist Mark Stephens.
With that in mind, a few points are worth highlighting:
1. Today’s poll was conducted by McLaughlin & Associates, who also served as Eric Cantor’s pollster. So you know it’s reliable.
2. Johnson’s super PAC thought it accurate to sample more Republicans than Democrats (32.8% to 32.5%). The sample for the most recent Marquette University Law School poll was D+6, with other polls showing the electorate more Democratic than that. Even with a wildly unrealistic Republican sample, they still show Johnson trailing.
3. The poll comes in advance of Senator Johnson’s trip to Wyoming tomorrow for a fundraiser hosted by billionaire Foster Friess. With middle class and working Wisconsinites fed up of the Ronald and the Donald show, Senator Johnson needs the multi-millionaires and billionaires who have financed his campaign more than ever.
4. The super PAC also promised to launch an ad “responding” to Russ Feingold on security issues. When an incumbent Republican Senator is still relying on his pet super PAC to bolster his embarrassing security record two months out from the election… it’s not a good sign.
“Today’s poll from Senator Johnson’s super PAC is a sad and desperate plea to right wing billionaires, asking them to come to his rescue. It’s just another reminder that Senator Johnson has outsourced his own campaign to the billionaires and corporations who want him to stay in Washington and protect their interests. Even after skewing the numbers to make Wisconsin seem like Utah, Johnson’s own super PAC still has him behind,” said Harry Hartfield, spokesman for the Democratic Party of Wisconsin.
