Voter Protection Director

We seek a talented Voter Protection Director to ensure that all eligible Wisconsinites are able to cast their ballot. Our right to vote is fundamental to all that we hope to accomplish; the Voter Protection Director is a crucial role that will develop, implement, and manage a robust, year-round voter protection program, ensuring free and fair elections in Wisconsin. A strong candidate for this position will think creatively about how to not only protect the right to vote but expand access to make it easier for people to exercise their right to participate in our democracy.

Job Responsibilities:

Hire and manage a team to execute a Voter Protection plan.

Coordinate with the senior management team to design and implement a Voter Protection plan throughout all the Party’s work.

Lead strategies to expand access and defend against incursions to the franchise at the state, local, and municipal level.

Collaborate with colleagues to create goals, objectives, and systems.

Build and sustain strong partnerships with national, state, local, and municipal level officials and organizations.

Supervise the Voter Protection team’s education, outreach, and intervention programs, both year-round and specific to elections.

Prepare for and file potential litigation and serve as legal resource for the team.


Qualifications (Required):

Strong legal skills and experience in the practice of law to quickly analyze and recommend responses to legal cases and rulings.

Possess superb project management skills to lead multiple, complex projects simultaneously.

Strong lens and judgement on issues of race and equity.

Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively to volunteers, internal staff, and external stakeholders.

Enjoy working toward and achieving ambitious goals; willing to go over, under, around or through any obstacle that gets in the way of meeting goals.

A growth mindset with ability to take and implement feedback.

Able to build relationships and collaborate with colleagues, voters, and volunteers who identify as POCI, and across lines of difference.


Qualifications (Preferred):

Experience leading a Voter Protection team and/or organizing.

Knowledge of Wisconsin/Midwestern politics is a plus.

While campaign experience is a plus, we are also willing to consider highly qualified candidates with non-campaign backgrounds.

About the Democratic Party of Wisconsin:  For the next four years, Wisconsin state politics will carry an almost unprecedented intensity and level of historical significance. Wisconsin faces a pivotal local and state Supreme Court race in the spring of 2020, will host the Democratic National Convention in 2020, and will be a – maybe THE – critical swing state in the 2020 presidential election. The 2020 state legislative elections will also shape redistricting in 2021, which will determine the state’s political future for a decade to come. And in 2022, the state will hold deeply competitive and consequential statewide elections, including for Governor and US Senator.

This is a senior-level position. The Voter Protection Director will be based in Madison. 

Salary and benefits: Salary range; $80,000-$90,000. Great benefits including; health care, dental, life insurance, short term and long-term disability, cell phone stipend, mileage reimbursement, generous annual vacation time, sick days, and holiday time off.
