Gov. Evers Delivers: Building On His Record Of Cutting Taxes To Address Rising Costs

MADISON, Wis. — While Tim Michels continues to hide his radical agenda from Wisconsinites, Governor Tony Evers put forward an aggressive and common sense plan to help tackle rising costs in Wisconsin.

This week, Gov. Evers continued to outline his plan to do the right thing for Wisconsin families. The plan includes a temporary gas tax holiday, funded by the record surplus, that would provide immediate relief at the pump and an end to the state’s mandatory markup on gas prices. He has also called for an expansion of the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit which would provide an additional $30 million in tax relief to over 100,000 Wisconsinites. Gov. Evers will also use the surplus to provide further tax relief, with a 10% income tax cut to working families who make less than $100,000, or $150,000 for married couples filing jointly. Gov. Evers’ plan also does the right thing to support Wisconsin seniors and veterans, with targeted tax credits to keep more money in their pocket.

In his first term Gov. Evers has already delivered a 15% tax cut for most Wisconsinites and cut taxes by $500 million for small businesses. Gov. Evers’ work delivered historic tax cuts to Wisconsinites, and he is going to do even more. Today, Wisconsin has a $5.4 billion surplus, and Gov. Evers believes in returning a portion of this back to the people.

Beyond the tax relief, Gov. Evers has proposed and pushed for other changes that will lower costs and help Wisconsinites. He joined with a bipartisan group of governors to call for expanded ethanol use in gas to decrease prices and called on Congress to pass the Gas Prices Relief Act, which would suspend the federal gas tax until the end of the year. Gov. Evers has also worked to decrease the costs of prescription drugs by supporting the $35 cap on insulin prices, and is committed to transparency and accountability for drug pricing.

Meanwhile, Tim Michels has no serious plan to address rising costs for working families. He has refused to support a temporary gas tax holiday and would rather follow the Republican playbook targeting tax breaks to those at the top and businesses like his own.

“Gov. Evers is cutting taxes for working families, small businesses, and everyday consumers,” said Democratic Party of Wisconsin Rapid Response Director Hannah Menchhoff. “Wisconsinites trust him to do the right thing and provide relief for families across our state.”
