MADISON, Wis. — MAGA House Republicans, including Wisconsin’s own Derrick Van Orden, are threatening to hold the American economy hostage to cut spending for vital jobs and systems that keep America moving forward. The GOP’s Default on America Plan would slash funding for Wisconsin teachers, veterans and law enforcement while pushing tax cuts for billionaires and corporations.
The Republican default plan also threatens to derail the critical 2023 Farm Bill, which is a lifeline for states like Wisconsin. Across the board cuts imposed by the GOP default plan would slash Farm Bill investments in key priorities such as farm supports, trade, and research.
“While President Biden and Wisconsin Democrats are fighting to strengthen our economy to help working Wisconsinites get ahead, Republicans like Derrick Van Orden are holding our economy hostage—even threatening to derail critical legislation like the Farm Bill,” said Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Ben Wikler. “As President Biden has said, America has never failed to pay our bills. Wisconsin Republicans should put their partisan gamesmanship aside and join President Biden in acting quickly to avoid a default.”
Instead of finding common ground, MAGA extremists’ Default on America plan could:
- Cut 60,000 teachers, hurting up to 25 million kids;
- Cut 30 million veterans health visits and increases the disability claims backlog by 130,000;
- Threaten health care for nearly 21 million Americans;
- Make it easier for billionaires to cheat on their taxes.
