Tim Michels Silence on Special Session Is As Loud As His Opposition to Abortion

MADISON, Wis. — Tim Michels remains silent on Governor Evers’ proposal that would create a pathway through voter referenda to repeal the archaic and restrictive 1849 ban on abortion, scheduled for tomorrow’s Special Session.

Despite overwhelming opposition to the restrictions on abortion even in cases of rape or incest, Michels continues to choose radical politics that pander to the ultra-MAGA right and not the will of Wisconsinites.

Michels, who has staked out the most extreme position on abortion, has called the 1849 law that includes no exceptions for rape or incest “an exact mirror” of his position and that he will not “soften” his stance on it. Michels has supported a radical, no-exception abortion policy for decades. Moreover, he donated thousands of dollars to groups that are seeking to ban abortion with no exceptions and even supported an organization that tracks the cell phones of women visiting Planned Parenthood clinics.

A recent Marquette poll showed that not only do 65% of Wisconsinites believe abortion should be legal in all or most cases, but also 79% of Republicans agree that abortion should be legal in cases of rape or incest.

“Tim Michels and Wisconsin Republicans would much rather put their radical beliefs ahead of Wisconsinites’ most basic needs,” said Democratic Party of Wisconsin Rapid Response Director Hannah Menchhoff. “While Michels’ silence on the Governor’s Special Session is no shock, it is certainly deafening. Tim Michels doesn’t want the people of Wisconsin to have a voice on this issue because he knows they don’t support his radical position.”
