ICYMI: Wausau Democrats Urge “No” Vote on Constitutional Amendment Ballot Questions

MADISON, Wis. — Today, WisDems 2nd Vice Chair Tricia Zunker, Democratic Chair of the 7th Congressional District Nancy Stencil, and Assembly Candidate Yee Leng Xiong held a press conference in Wausau encouraging Wisconsinites to vote ‘NO’ on the two constitutional amendment questions appearing on the August 13 primary ballot.

Speakers highlighted both the devastating impact these risky and misleading constitutional amendments could have on communities like Wausau and the positive impacts Governor Evers’ quick action in the wake of the pandemic as Republican politicians in the legislature stonewalled efforts to distribute funding to support PFAS mitigation and child care. The Wausau press conference is part of a series of events that have been held across the state by community members and elected officials urging a no vote on the upcoming ballot questions.

Watch the event and see what speakers had to say, in part, below:

WisDems 2nd Vice Chair Tricia Zunker: “Here in Wausau, we know exactly how transformative the swift release of federal funding was for our community. And we know first-hand how dangerous these ballot questions really are. The GOP-backed amendments would prevent the Governor’s  swift action that transformed our community here in Wausau  from happening  in the future when Wisconsin  communities need swift action the most.”

Democratic Chair of the 7th Congressional District Nancy Stencil: “In moments of emergency such as during the COVID-19 pandemic, or when our drinking water is unsafe, we cannot wait for gridlock to resolve in Madison before we get help here in Wausau. One of the most significant examples of federal funds allocated by Governor Evers is our new water treatment facility here in Wausau that makes our water PFAs free.”

Assembly Candidate Yee Leng Xiong: “At every turn, Republicans in our legislature have refused to commit critical funding to extend [Child Care Counts], even as parents and child care providers alike have literally pleaded with the Legislature to Save Child Care Counts. And throughout the state, working parents continue to struggle and child care centers are being forced to close. Imagine what would happen if not only critical funding for child care, but all federal funding granted to Wisconsin was subject to the obstructionism of our GOP Legislature.”
