Leader-Telegram: GOP Candidate for Governor Tom Tiffany Did Not Vote for Blatnik Bridge Funding He Recently Touted

MADISON, Wis. — New reporting from the Leader-Telegram points out that Tom Tiffany did not vote for funding to replace the Blatnik Bridge, despite releasing a recent statement seemingly taking a victory lap for the funding that neglects to mention this fact. The $1.05 billion released last week to replace the Blatnik Bridge was approved as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and has been held up by the Trump administration for months without a clear reason.

Leader-Telegram: Trump administration releases transportation funds for bridge that connects Duluth to Superior

  • U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin, a Democrat, announced last week that she “has successfully pushed U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy to release the funding for the bridge replacement project,” her office wrote in a press release.
  • “There is no good reason these funds should have been held up in the first place, and I am glad we forced the Trump administration to do right by Wisconsin. Rebuilding this bridge will mean that billions of dollars’ worth of products can get to market efficiently, families can get to work on time, and millions of travelers get to their destinations safely,” Baldwin said. “Wisconsin’s economy and the safety of families across the Midwest can’t wait any longer for this bridge to be rebuilt — so let’s get to work.”
  • U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany, R-Minocqua, represents the Seventh Congressional District, which includes Douglas County and Superior, where the bridge is located. Tiffany, who is running for Wisconsin governor, praised Trump for releasing the money. He noted the importance of funding the project — although his press release never points out he voted against the funding measure.
  • Tiffany’s press release didn’t go unnoticed by the Democratic Party.
  • “Tom Tiffany voted against crucial funding for the Blatnik Bridge but then released a statement this week touting the funding as if he had anything to do with it,” said Democratic Party of Wisconsin spokesperson Emily Stuckey. “Tiffany is a typical D.C. politician—taking credit for things he didn’t do and expecting voters not to notice.”
