RATING CHANGE: Duey Stroebel Moves To “Against Removal” And Deals Possible Fatal Blow To GOP Impeachment Threats

MADISON, Wis. — In a new video released today by CBS 58, Sen. Duey Stroebel became the first Republican in the Wisconsin Senate to explicitly oppose impeachment of Justice Janet Protasiewicz. The GOP now lacks the necessary supermajority to convict and remove Justice Protasiewicz should Robin Vos and Assembly Republicans make good on their threats to impeach.

With this announcement, Sen. Stroebel’s rating on the WisDems Defend Justice Impeachment tracker moves to “Against Removal.”

Sen. Stroebel’s opposition to impeachment follows the release of a new letter from former Justice David Prosser advising Robin Vos that any impeachment would “likely backfire” and that “there should be no effort to impeach Justice Protasiewicz on anything we know now.” Prosser was appointed by Vos to lead a secret GOP panel advising Republicans on a possible impeachment of Justice Protasiewicz.

Democratic Party of Wisconsin Communications Director Joe Oslund issued the following statement:

“In an odd twist, Duey Stroebel seems to have stumbled his way into doing the right thing, announcing his explicit opposition to igniting a constitutional crisis by impeaching a sitting state Supreme Court justice. While it’s long been clear the law wasn’t on the Republicans’ side, they now lack the votes to pursue conviction in the Senate—underscoring how any impeachment in the Assembly would represent an unprecedented abuse of the Wisconsin Constitution. Broken clocks are right twice a day, and now that David Prosser and Duey Stroebel have somehow emerged as voices of reason here, Robin Vos should have no excuse for not knowing what time it is: time to drop his unconstitutional impeachment threats.”
