Wisconsin Democrats Celebrate Pride Month

MADISON, Wis. — In celebration of Pride Month, Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Ben Wikler released the following statement:

“Today, Wisconsin celebrates the first day of Pride Month, and we at the Democratic Party of Wisconsin are proud to honor the powerful history and resiliency of the LGBTQ+ community—both in Wisconsin and nationwide. LGBTQ+ Wisconsinites come from all walks of life and include our veterans, business owners, neighbors, and elected officials like Wisconsin’s own Senator Tammy Baldwin, Congressman Mark Pocan, and Assembly Democratic Leader Greta Neubauer. They help make the Badger State better for all Wisconsin residents.

“Pride month is both a reminder of the path to this moment and of the work yet to be done. It marks the month of the Stonewall Uprising and offers us a chance to recommit to the ideal of a country in which, whoever we love, however we identify, all of us are accorded the respect and equality that every person deserves. These advances won since 1969 are now being threatened by extremist Republican politicians who are more concerned with banning children’s books and regulating people’s personal lives than they are serving the American people. Even here in Wisconsin, Republican legislators spent their last day in session passing a bill to place restrictions on transgender young people.

“Wisconsinites are fortunate for the leadership of Tammy Baldwin, the country’s first openly LGBTQ+ senator and a trailblazer in the LGBTQ+ movement. Tammy has led the charge to protect LGBTQ+ individuals’ access to healthcare, ensure freedom from discrimination, and protect same-sex marriage rights. Democracy only thrives when we all have a voice, and Tammy’s work to make sure that LGBTQ+ people are heard in Washington is invaluable.

“During Pride month, we reflect on our progress towards LGBTQ+ equality and are reminded that the fight is still not over. We cannot let extremist Republicans use hate and fear to divide us or push policies that would roll back the progress we’ve made. At the Democratic Party of Wisconsin, we are committed to uplifting LGBTQ+ individuals and ensuring that all people are treated with dignity and respect in the Badger State.”
