Wisconsin Democrats on Gov. Evers’ Veto of GOP Gerrymander Bill
MADISON, Wis. — In response to Gov. Evers vetoing Republican legislation seeking to draw lines to protect incumbent Republican politicians, Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Ben Wikler issued the following statement:
“There’s a word for when politicians draw lines to maximize their own chance of reelection: It’s called gerrymandering. Republicans are desperate to maintain their unconstitutional grip on power, and openly admitted that this latest ploy was their ‘best shot at keeping the majority.’ Changing the fair maps submitted by Gov. Evers to protect Republican incumbents means they are no longer fair maps—they are gerrymandered maps, plain and simple. Wisconsinites deserve a government where the will of the people is the law of the land—but Republicans in Madison seem focused on locking in power instead of serving the public.”
