WisDems Respond to Maria Lazar Announcing Candidacy for Wisconsin Supreme Court
In response to Maria Lazar announcing her candidacy for Wisconsin Supreme Court, WisDems spokesperson Philip Shulman released the following statement.
“Wisconsin Republicans traded in Rebecca Bradley for Maria Lazar, a candidate who is just as partisan and would continue to try to rig the law against Wisconsinites just as Bradley has. Rebecca Bradley knew her record was too extreme and toxic to be successful in this race, and that’s exactly why Maria Lazar will be rejected by Wisconsinites. Similar to the right-wing candidates for Wisconsin’s Supreme Court that the WisDems have helped defeat in recent years, we’re going to make sure Wisconsinites know Maria Lazar has a partisan agenda will do everything in her power to restrict abortion rights, tear down democracy, and hurt working families Maria Lazar has no business being a Supreme Court justice.”
Lazar has an extreme partisan record, as she has touted endorsements from election deniers, has worked to take away Wisconsinites’ voting rights, defended the GOP’s gerrymandered maps, and was previously endorsed by the no-exceptions anti-abortion group Pro-Life Wisconsin.

- As An Assistant District Attorney For Then Waukesha DA Brad Schimel, Lazar Defended The Anti-Union Act 10, Which A Dane County Circuit Court Judge Later Ruled Unconstitutional In December 2024. With Republicans appealing the ruling, the former law is likely to face appeals and supreme court rulings in the near future.
- Lazar Is A Friend Of Controversial Right-Wing Groups Looking To Strip Rights From Wisconsinites. Lazar received an endorsement as recently as 2022 from the no-exceptions anti-abortion group Pro-Life Wisconsin, did not disavow $250,000 in supportive spending by out-of-state dark money group “Fair Courts America”, and has given talks to the Federalist Society.
- Lazar Has Touted Ties To Election-Deniers. In her 2022 campaign, Lazar listed a series of endorsements by big lie proponents on her campaign website.
- Lazar Has Worked To Restrict Wisconsinites’ Right To Vote. Lazar has more than once ruled against protecting Wisconsinites voting rights.
- Lazar Ruled To Eliminate Scholarships That Had Given Wisconsin’s Minority Students A More Level Playing Field For 40 Years. Lazar ruled with the majority in a case that eliminated Wisconsin’s Minority Education Retention Grant.
