FLIP FLOPPER: Bryan Steil’s Changing Stories on Trump’s “Horrible City” Remarks

MADISON, Wis. — Scrambling to contain the fallout from Trump telling a meeting of House Republicans yesterday that Milwaukee was a “horrible city,” Republican Bryan Stiel offered dramatically different stories about what exactly Donald Trump said.

“Bryan Steil can’t keep his story straight about Donald Trump calling Milwaukee a ‘horrible city’ because he’s struggling to defend the indefensible,” said Democratic Party of Wisconsin Communications Director Joe Oslund. “We know what Donald Trump said and we know what Donald Trump meant because Donald Trump has demonstrated nothing but contempt and disrespect for our state and the people who live here. Bryan Steil’s fealty to Donald Trump is compelling him to deny reality, and it’s sad to watch.”

Steil initially posted that “President Trump did not say this”…

Steil later appeared to acknowledge to WISN TV that Trump did call Milwaukee a “horrible city” but “he wasn’t talking about the city, he was talking about specific issues in the city”…MATT SMITH: Will you acknowledge that these words at least came out of his mouth? The context is different, but did he say this?

BRYAN STEIL: He wasn’t talking about the city, he was talking about specific issues in the city.

Steil then told WTMJ Radio’s Afternoon News that “I don’t believe he said that…”

HOST: Congressman, this is the quote: Milwaukee, where we have our convention, is a horrible city. Did he say that, is that what you heard?

BRYAN STEIL: I was not recording, I wasn’t taking notes, I don’t believe he said that.
